That sucks...

So as some of you may know I am working at Hofstra Law School. If I have learned anything from working here for the past 6 months it is this : Law School seems to suck!
When I was doing my undergrad at UB, even in High school, I hated studying. I would probably still hate studying if I was in school. Studying to me always seemed like the most awful chore I had to do (besides the dishes. I HATE DOING THE DISHES) and I always had to work so hard at doing it too so I could get just a decent grade on any test I ever took. And lets be honest even when I was "trying" to study I really wasnt and therefore I have not been the best test taker during my school days.
But when I walk around the law school there is one common thing between all the students: They are constantly studying! Even on the first day of school there were people all over the place already ON THE FIRST DAY with their laptops reading and writing away. That seems a little crazy to me.
I would go nuts if I had to study this much and read textbooks and assignments all the time. I am much more of a project person. Plus I really only enjoy doing things that I actually want to do. I really hate doing things that I'm "supposed" to do or "have" to do. Work related doesnt count.
I hope all these people in law school are the biggest partiers when they are not studying or reading (whenever the hell that is!), because if anyone deserves a nice cold drink on friday night after school its these kids! Cheers.

Delayedd...I CANT STAND IT!

Hey everyone sorry for the lag in blog time. Nothing too exciting has happened in the past couple days that was blog worthy every single day so I figured I would wait a few days and then just catch everyone up on whats been happening. I think I will just go with Wednesday and Thursday nights. So Wednesday night my friends and I had a very awesome horror movie mini marathon, which turned out very successful if I do say so myself. The two movies we chose to watch were The Last House on the Left (the new one) and Teeth.
Now I don't know about anyone else but I have seen the original Last House on the Left by Wes Craven and I was less than impressed. Granted it was one of Cravens first horror flicks, but it was just terrible. That crap scared people in the 70s???? HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE! It weirded me out at times and made me laugh a lot. The plot is basically the same in both movies with just a few differences. The basic gist of the movie is there is a family with a daughter who go to their vacation house on a lake and the daughter wants to go into town to hang with an old friend. They meet this kid their age who says he has pot which they are very interested in. He mistakingly brings the girls back to where the kid and his family is staying and while they are hanging out getting high the kids father, uncle, and derranged semi lesbian aunt (I guess?) come back and are less than pleased with the new company. The family turn out to be murderers on the run and do not intend to let the girls who in fear of them ratting them out. From then on there are rapes, stabbings, shooting, and lots of chasing. The "bad guys" think they kill the girls and need a place to crash and end up trying to spend the night at the house of the parents of one of the girls. None of them know who anyone is. Basically the parents find out what the crazy people in their house did to their daughter and really let them have it.
In the original there is a very bizarre soundtrack and it plays at very random times. However in both films there is not much soundtrack at all. There is a lot of silence, sometimes uncomfortably so, during scenes which makes watching those scenes very uncomfortable, which is probably the whole point. I have to say in the original version the "bad guys" seemed to do a lot more horrible things than the parents but in the new one the parents were the real bad asses kicking some serious murderer booty at the end. And one other really uncomfortable difference was in the original the creepy murderers make the two girls touch eachother and in this new one, the leader of the group rapes the daughter for a seriously uncomfortable amount of time. Seriously. If you do not like rape scenes then I suggest you not see this film because it is quite graphic and it goes on much longer than you want it to. However if you really enjoy seeing people be tortured then you should TOTALLY see this movie!
Ok second movie up was Teeth. Now I had heard about this movie a couple years ago and had seen it last summer. It is the most bizarre movie ever but I think everyone should totally see it because its just too ridiculous not to watch. So the basic premise of the movie is about this girl who grows up spreading the word of Jesus and telling kids everywhere to not have sex before marriage. One day when her boyfriend, who also "promised" to abstain from sex as well, tries to force himself on her and they both discover that she has a set of razor sharp teeth in her vajayjay. You can use your imagination from there to figure out what happens next. And then basically also for the rest of the movie. This film is sick, twisted, and darkly hilarious and I think everyone should go out and rent it. If you can handle it.
So that was my Wednesday night. Last night, on Thursday, me and some girlfriends went to go see John Roberts! For those that do not know who he is, if anyone has ever seen the YouTube videos Jackie and Debra, The Christmas Tree, or The Phone Call to name a few, he plays Debra and also the mother. He is so funny and last night his comedy show consisted of them playing all his videos and then he would come out as the character and elaborate. It was not as seriously funny as I hoped it was going to be but I can understand because once you have this popular video with lines that everyone has memorized and are so famous now its hard to make new things up and expand on them. But it was still really funny. As a mini surprise David Cross showed up! I'm pretty sure he just came out and tried to wing it and I don't even care he was so funny! I hate to say it but I laughed harder at David Cross than at John Roberts :( But both were still really funny and so entertaining to watch.
As a mini side note if anyone ever goes to Comix Comedy Club (353 W 14th Street) its a really nice place. I'm not sure about late night shows but for a 7:30 show tickets were $15, it was a two item minimum and the food was delicious. I would definitely go there again!

My Brain Is Melting!!

Ok so yesterday I went to the gym and my iPod is dead so i watched the news during my 40 minute workout and I became aware of a few very weird and interesting things.
One story that caught my eye was about animals getting swine flu. When you go to fairs and things of that nature there are usually farm animals that are waiting to race, or be judged for prizes or just there for an adorable petting zoo for people of all ages. So this means that when you go to look and pet the animals they are in a large pen of some sort behind a metal fence. Now farmers and animal owners are worried about the animals getting swine flu from children and other people. So now if you visit a farm or a fair where there are animals on display they are behind a glass case. How mean is that! Not only is it mean for the animals who have to be confined to this glass case all day and who knows even maybe all night, but it really is not fair to the people who are there to visit the animals. If the farmers and animal owners are so concerned with the animals getting sick, then maybe they should forgo being at that event this year. Just dont bring the animals at all. The children and people at the fair will get over not seeing the animals for one year I'm sure. And if they can't seem to get over it then I guess they have some serious farm animal issues they need to figure out sooner than later. But on the serious side of this, the animals will be safe if they are kept at their home and away from all the swine flu infected people walking around petting them.
Another weird and funny thing mentioned in yesterdays news was that apparently, multitasking is ruining our brains. That's right folks, if you are a professional multitasker, our brains will start leaking out of ears fairly soon. A study was done that showed college students who multitask too much had really horrbile memories. Ok not only does this seem like it could be slightly true but also kind of silly. Not to mention the fact that if multitasking rots your brain, then theres a lot of people out there who are going to wind up mentally retarded. For example, anyone (such as me) who is a computer/social media multitasker. That means that me, all the youtube stars out there, most celebrities, and anyone who works in an office. All of us will eventually have terrible memories, and our knowledge will deteriorate until we can no longer function. OK that last part was kind of an exaggeration but you get my point. For me, at my office I am constantly doing a million things at once. I listen to Pandora, watch YouTube videos, update twitter, mess around on Facebook, answer emails, print out documents, chat on Aim and most of these programs are up and running all at the same time all day long. Hence my prediction of my brain oozing out of my ears at any moment should this continue on for the next year.
I know if any of my friends are reading this they are so sick of me talking about YouTube but, you'll have to get over it for a minute. All the YouTube "stars" are constantly on their own many forms of social media and they have to be to keep up their fan base. All the ones I watch such as Shane Dawson, Charles Trippy, ShayCarl, Phil Defranco, etc. all update twitter constantly, I'm sure they are editing videos constantly, watching TV, going on the internet for research, etc. That is their job so basically what the news is saying, that for people like the YouTube stars their jobs are making their brains deteriorate. For what its worth YouTube stars: I have enjoyed watching you for the time being and should your brains rot anytime soon, just know that you were loved and watched by millions :)

Norman Bates is the Mother!

Ok so last night I experienced something that all horror movie buffs (like myself) should experience at least once in their lives. I went to an all night, Pay-to-get-out Horror movie Marathon! And I have to say it was one of the most fun things I have done in a long time.
I meant to go with a friend who had to bail at the last minute but after some consideration on what else to do for the evening, I decided that I would go enjoy the marathon myself. I had been waiting weeks for this event and I was not going to let a little something like being alone ruin my fun. And I am so glad that I made that decision!
The marathon took place at the Cinema Arts Center in Huntington. My trip there was actually very fitting for a horror movie marathon. I was coming from East Meadow and I did not have my GPS so I was using written directions I copied from MapQuest. So I was traveling down 106 for a while and time was getting closer to when the marathon would begin and I had no idea where I was going and it was so dark out there so I pulled off to the side of the road. I decided that I would download a GPS on my phone which really helped considering I had no idea where the hell I was! Ironically it turned out I was going the right way the entire time. Woops.
I show up finally at the Cinema Arts Center, get a great parking spot, and go inside to buy my ticket. The line was in the cafe and stretched all the way outside, which is where I had to wait. At 11 pm they started letting us all in. I noticed that many people had brought pillows and blankets and snacks with them. I cursed myself for not being more prepared, as I had only brough a sweatshirt with me in case I was cold and did not provide much of a pillow. I discovered later though that had I brought any of those things, I would have fallen asleep much quicker and much deeper during the movies.
Ok so lets get to what really matters here: THE MOVIES! I think that you deffinitely need to be a) a real movie buff and b) a horror/scary/thriller movie buff to really appreciate these movies. And I give a lot of credit to the people who were running this marathon for picking such fantastic movies.
First up was King Kong vs Godzilla! Which was completely amazing and hysterical. King Kong and Godzilla are so obviously people dressed up in these costumes running around. There are a lot of toys used to look like actual trains, tanks, etc. And of course the american dubbing over the actual Japanese dialogue is one of the best parts about the whole thing.
Next up was a movie called Spider Baby. I have never seen this movie before but I would absolutely reccomend that people go out and see it! Or rent it I guess considering its an old black and white film. The only person you will probably recognize, as I did, is Lon Chaney the original wherewolf (who also played the wolfman in an old Abbott and Costello movie!) The concept of the movie is kind of hard to describe but the people in this movie are nuts, and its hilarious, and amazing and I reccomend this movie to everyone.
Next was a movie called Suspiria which was from 1977. Ok I am going to copy and paste the plot from IMDB because I really could not tell you what the hell this movie was about. Even if I hadnt taken that 15-20 power nap in the middle, I still would not have understood this bizarre movie. "A young American dancer travels to Europe to join a famous ballet school. As she arrives, the camera turns to another young woman, who appears to be fleeing from the school. She returns to her apartment where she is gruesomely murdered by a hideous creature. Meanwhile, the young American is trying to settle in at the ballet school, but hears strange noises and is troubled by bizarre occurrences. She eventually discovers that the school is merely a front for a much more sinister organization." Basically the weirdos who run the ballet school are like witches or something? I dunno it was weird but ok I guess. Not my favorite of the night at all.
Ok now after Suspiria and falling asleep a little, I was completely ready for what they showed next. At this point it was around I guess 4 or 5am. The next (and amazing) film up was called Dead Snow! This is a Norwegian horror film about a group of young folk, I would say in their 20s, who go to a friends cabin in the middle of the winter to play winter sports and just have fun on their Easter break. A creepy guy shows up telling them that during World War II, there was a group of really ruthless Nazis who stole all the towns peoples prized posessions and really let the local town have it until the town couldnt take it anymore and they attacked the Nazi group and chased and killed them in the snowy woods. Turns out that the Nazis treasures were hidden in the cabin and the stupid kids decided to take some which realllly pissed the Nazis off. Especially since they were zombies still roaming the snowy forest! I'm sure you can guess what happened next. Some weird sex of course happens and we all know that if you have sex in a horror movie, you die. Silly nymphos. So hilarity and amazing death scenes ensue with lots of intestines and growling Nazis and basically just two or so hours of awesomeness. Go rent Dead Snow. Yes there are subtitles but it doesnt even matter because this movie is so awesome that you stop realizing you have to read after a while.
Ok last up for this amazing marathon experience was a 5th promised mystery film. When the guy in charge started talking about a director who really was the pioneer for modernizing horror films I was getting a little lost. I was really not the huge horror movie buff that I thought I was compared to many of the people in the theater. So I was really not sure what to expect and when the film started rolling and the words "Alfred Hitchcock" appear the entire place starts going crazy including myself. How AWESOME! So the last film of the evening of course, was Psycho, which I had seen most of but not entirely through and it was so worth it. Such a great film, such a great concept. If you havent seen it yet, then I totally apologize for the title of this blog but you should see it anyway. If you HAVE seen this movie then how awesome is it? Alfred Hitchcock is really great and I really want to see more of his movies.
Next summer everyone really needs to go see this marathon I highly recommend it. Its $29 to get in which sounds kind of expensive but if you stay the entire night, you get 10 dollars back and theres an awesome bagel breakfast waiting for you when you exit the theater. I am really looking forward to next summer and seeing some very awesome classic horror films and some unconventional new ones.

FIRST BLOG!!

Hey everyone! Jamie here and this is my first blog! Just wanted to say hiii!! I'm going to be making (almost) daily vlogs on YOUTUBE soon but I also wanted to make a blog here to talk about some different stuff and also because I think more people need to read.
Its so easy to just watch TV (like I do constantly so I'm guilty of it as well!) or listen to the radio, or watch movies or be on YouTube constantly like I am! Reading is deffinitely dying out and I think it's so sad because I feel that it's so important. I have been reading since as far back as I can remember. I had an entire container of Bearenstein Bear books that I would dump out on my floor and read through all of them over and over again. Reading is so fun for me. The only problem I really have with reading lately is this new obsession Hollywood has with turning great books into terrible movies!
This is kind of a touchy subject for me because out of all of my friends I deffinitely read the most and I always have. So this means that when we go to the movies together and see movies that were originally books, I get annoyed. My friends always end up loving the movie and I hate it because they changed everything! It really dissapoints me now. Why is it necessary for Hollywood to completely change things about these great books? Why do they feel the need to kill off the wrong character? Or change a characters name and occupation? These authors wrote these fantastic works of literature and Hollywood just changes everything into crap that everyone who doesnt read just eats right up.
On the one hand they make these great movies that probably make the movie companies a lot of money so, yes, in that respect that is great for them. But I get so dissapointed when I go in expecting to see a favorite book brought to life on the big screen and I leave feeling let down because they changed all these great things I loved reading about.
Another thing that makes me a little upset is when I read a book I get lost in this other world of characters and stories and their lives and I create how all these things look in my head. It's a little dissapointing when I see someone elses view of these characters on the screen. I know that sounds a little selfish of me especially since I am not the one who makes these movies and therefore they couldnt possibly know how I think these characters should look or sound or act. I just wish that maybe everyone could be on the same page about a book and it would look like it does in my head and all would be peachy keen!
Oh well...maybe in another life that would actually happen :)
